• Active Worlds in all security

Like as almost anywhere on the Internet, Active Worlds knows from time to time some visitors with bad intensions. They're after new visitors who're not aware neither informed about the information below :

!

When purchasing your account with Alterlinks (official Active Worlds distributor in Europe) your bank information is not exchanged with our servers and aren't saved. Your informations aren't known to any staff member of our team, but are exchanged directly with the bank using the secured SSL protocol.

You can purchase in all security your citizen account at this address

!

You should NOT under any circumstances communicate your citizen password, neither the password of your e-mail account configured in your citizen options.
Indeed, it will be this address where Active Worlds will automatically send you your password in case it got lost.
To retrieve your password click on the button "I Forgot" of the authentication screen (login).

Some might not hesitate to present themselves as Active Worlds staff or even a person working for your hosting service if you have one, it is enough to remember yourself that your password should not be communicated to others, and besides, Active Worlds staff themselves already have your password, they will not ask you for it.

!

If you are in a situation where you had to change your e-mail address, do not forget to also update your email address in the citizen options, because once your password lost, you will have no other way to retrieve it.

!

Other advised protection methods are to use a password more difficult to guess than your first name or date of birth and use a different password for your "privileged" option.
In general, it is always advised to use different passwords for protecting different things.

!

Like as when visiting a website, it is possible to find files available for download in worlds. Make sure that these files can be opened without risk (virus, trojan, ..), in special when the files are executable (.exe)

!

After observing several doubtful practices, it seems important to remind the following information :

Neither the company SARL Alterlinks nor Activeworlds.Inc will ask you for information like your complete creditcard number or your citizen password per email.
If you receive an email or any other written request signed Alterlinks or Activeworlds asking you for this kind of information, it is most likely falsified.
Do not answer such requests and do not hesitate to communicate a copy of such request, including all headers, to either Alterlinks or Activeworlds.

Note that such falsified requests are also common by telegram within Active Worlds.

Other doubtful practices such as sales of virtual worlds, citizen accounts and hosting for Active Worlds have also been observed. Indeed, communicating a world's password is needed for its hosting, as well as the privilege password is needed for bot hosting.
Some will not hesitate to make attractive offers (most often free hosting services) for the only reason to abuse your trust by taking possession of your world or citizen account.
Also here, to save yourself from such bad experiences, choose rather Activeworlds.Inc or one of its official distributors. Alterlinks is the only official distributor in France, but other distributors do exist in Europe and the rest of the world.

Same advise applies to the Active Worlds browser which is available for download on numerous web sites.
Even when most websites might offer a clean installation file, some might propose files containing viruses or trojans.
Also here, prefere rather http://activeworldscom or any of its official distributors like Alterlinks : they offer an installation file signed with a digital certificate proving its origin and unmodified condition. Digital certificates are provided by thrustworthly companies as Verisign, Thawte, etc... and are only issued after a thorough investigation of the requesting company.
